One of two cemeteries in the Southbury Historic District, White Oak Cemetery is a microcosm of New England cemetery design over 280 years. The cemetery contains headstones, from as early as the 1730s, of a great variety of materials, including schist, marble, brownstone, and granite. The shapes and styles of the stones reflect trends in form and decoration of different historical periods. The early death’s head motifs, for instance, gave way in the late 18th century to cherubs and urn and willow designs in the 19th century.
