Geocache Description:

Warning: This multi-cache is intended to be physically demanding. Please take your time and do not overdo it. Stop if you are feeling dizzy or light-headed. Heart attacks are strictly prohibited and may result in a permanent inability to “keep on caching”.

The Bolton Street Gut Buster

AKA The One That Doesn't Go Into The Cemetery Bolton Street
Yes, you will need to go up and down this bridge - many times.

This multi-cache involves going up and down one of Wellington’s steepest streets numerous times. It is intended to be done on foot and would be quite difficult to do otherwise. Expect burning calves and a pounding heart. The number of waypoints will give you an indication of how many ascents and descents are required.

Bolton street offers a great view of the motorway, the Embassy of Chile, the Sexton's Cottage (historical building) and some lovely brick houses. On occasion, some of those crazy “fit people” can be seen running up and down it.

In order to minimise unnecessary disruption to local residents, please do not attempt to drive between the waypoints. As the roads are narrow and parking is limited, more time would be spent parking than caching.

Please replace the cache carefully and ensure that the container is not visible. You may need to jiggle it around a bit to find a position that works.

Many thanks to Mrs TallGuy789 for pounding the street to test the waypoints and painstakingly checking the maths (many times) until everything was correct.

Parking

Parking can be a little difficult in this area, as the roads are narrow and spaces can be hard to find at times. Please be considerate of the residents. If possible, try parking at the top of Bolton Street, near the start point. Do not park anywhere marked “Residents Parking” from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Areas marked “Coupon Parking Zone” are fine so long as you do not exceed two hours during Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. There are pay and display parks at the lower part of Bolton Street.

Alternatively, there are also bus stops on both sides of The Terrace, very close to the intersection with Bolton Street.

Tips

  • The GPS signal can be patchy at the bottom of Bolton Street because of the tall buildings. This may make some waypoints quite challenging with a GPSr without maps.
  • Some poles may have several sets of numbers on them, but only one should match the clue.
  • The “first 4 digit year” means top to bottom, left to right i.e. as English is read.
  • The cache does not contain a pen or pencil so you will need to bring your own. The container is not big enough for trackables or swag.
  • The final location should not be difficult to find and is an approximate 500m walk from WP10. The cache is well camouflaged, but the hint should make for a easy find.
  • Print out this worksheet before you start - it will make it much easier to record the answers and work out the coordinates.
Good luck!
