This is a scuba diving cache at approx 52 feet below surface, although seasonal Kootenay Lake levels could be +\- 5 feet. Follow all scuba diving safety procedures and dive safely.
The GPS coordinates take you to the entry point which is under the Nelson Big Orange Bridge.
There are YouTube videos on this site just search for SS Ymir and this would be part of a good dive plan.
Once under the bridge in the water you stay on the east side of the pillars. You can surface swim to the fourth pillar set from shore. This set has rounded edges on the east face and it supports the south side of the overhead lattice work structure of the bridge. If you descend on the north East corner you will find a rope line tied off to scrap metal near the pillar at the bottom of the lake. This rope will be your guide, follow it at a bearing of approx 320 degrees.
At about 30 feet of depth you will see some bicycles and the rope will begin to angle to the right. Due to the mass of structural steel in the bridge and the various scrap metal in the water, don't be surprised if your compass is useless. Trust the ropes and signs.
There will be some signage that indicates the direction to the SS Ymir sunken steam Tug (1899-1929). Just 30 feet or so from the bow of the ship at ground level on the south side you will see a Sports Pal canoe sunk beside the wreck, the cache site is in the bow of the canoe. It contains a slate to write your name , date of visit, and home town. Bring a pencil to play it safe, but there currently is one attached to the cache.
