Geocache Description:

Is geocaching an art form? There are certainly some wonderfully crafted containers with great camo. Or how about an elegant puzzle cache? Sometimes art can be inspired by less obvious sources.

Some time ago, I was tackling high terrain caches while wearing shorts and a t-shirt. After hacking my way through thorns and poison ivy, my arms and legs were thoroughly scratched and itchy. I then met up with Fort Worth artist Anne Allen who had been working on abstract line drawings. We realized that my skin bore a gory resemblance to her work. The intersecting scratches, dried blood, and bumpy rashes were like a series of red brushstrokes against the canvas of my skin. Or at least that's what it looked like through an artist's eyes. Anne began a series of drawings and paintings based on injuries sustained while geocaching, and would become almost sadistically giddy after finding out I had been battling with briars which was always a potential source of inspiration. She loved to see me in pain!

A series of Anne's "bloody scratch drawings" will be featured during the exhibit Skin Game at the Lakeview Gallery on the Tarrant County College Northwest Campus. Each piece is titled with the GC code, coordinates, and name of a cache that I've found which resulted in some kind of physical trauma to me. Did one of your caches make the cut (literally)? Come and find out at the exhibit reception. This is a casual gallery - your favorite geocaching clothes are fine. In fact, torn clothing with blood stains would make you fit in even more. Feel free to expose your scratched and mangled body parts to the artist; maybe it'll inspire her to create a new piece.

Date: Saturday, February 2
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Lakeview Gallery within the WFAB Building, Tarrant County College Northwest Campus, 4801 Marine Creek Parkway, Fort Worth, TX 76179
Parking: Plenty available in the lots southeast of the building.

There will be an artist's talk at 12 noon which you will not want to miss. Light refreshments will be served. Before and after the talk, we can share our war stories from the thicket. What's the worst terrain you've ever found yourself in? Have any scars from caching adventures?

In case you aren't able to attend the event, the exhibit runs from January 19 to February 16, so you can stop by another time to check out the work (but you won't get a ). The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Many more pieces have been created than will be able to be shown, so if you own some caches that require bushwhacking, there may be a piece of art inspired by it that isn't on display. I hope to see lots of people there!
