Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Ocala National Forest! You seek a soda bottle preform, which will give you coordinates to an ammo can. I recommend you bring a pokey stick to extend your reach, a $10 bill to ease your travels and a sense of adventure, as you follow this historic recreation of the Battle of the Sidhe. Your best times for hunting this cache is betwixt 0700 and 1730, Wednesday through Monday. Tuesdays are not good days for hunting this.

On to the tale which brought you here!

What most folks refer to as fairies, are known amongst themselves as either the Sidhe, or the Fae, or simply, the Fair Folk, amongst humans who delve in magic. There are two factions amongst the Sidhe, divided along seasonal lines. The Winter Fae ally themselves with such creatures as trolls and goblins. The Summer Fae ally themselves with such creatures as unicorns and centaurs. Whilst tensions are always high between the Winter and Summer Courts, they are typically in balance, which keeps them from outright war.

But not always...

The Sidhe, being beings of magic, are susceptible to emotional influences. Struggles between the lesser races, such as us humans, are oft reflected in struggles between the Courts. Many of our large scale military conflicts are mirrored by combat betwixt Winter and Summer.

In April, 1862, our nation had been at war with itself for about a year, in a conflict which set state against state, neighbor against neighbor and even brother against brother. The emotional turmoil from this war was all it took to set Winter against Summer. Past slights were answered with violent attacks. Subtle feuds were used as excuses for deadly aggressions. It was a bloody time for the Fae. The battle lines had been drawn.

Close to Stage One, the posted coordinates for this cache, was the base camp for the Winter Court of the Sidhe. Stage Two, the final, is close to where the Summer Court's armies massed. Onlookers grimaced, knowing that the forest would soon be bathed in Fae blood. The only hope lay in the persuasive abilities, and minor magical talent of my great, great, etc, uncle, Pastor John Sharrow.

Pastor John knew that the Sidhe held human life to be sacred, and would go out of their way to avoid letting their conflicts impact human lives. He placed himself directly between both armies, and called for an Accord, or truce, so he could plea for peace between the factions. Both Summer and Winter respected Pastor John, as he had interceded for both Courts in past squabbles, so they agreed to talk. These talks lasted for several days, mostly because neither Court was willing to budge. Their stubbornness would be their ultimate downfall!

Winter and Summer were so committed to shouting at each other that they simply had no room left for listening. Pastor John had finally had his fill of Sidhe petulance. He resorted to magic, and had hoped to simply dump some cold water on the Winter and Summer leaders, to get their attention. But since magic is keyed directly to the emotional state of the wielder, what was supposed to be a few gallons, became a deluge. More water fell on this spot than had ever fell before. Much to Pastor John's surprise, this act of frustration worked! The Fae realized that the impending battle was morally repugnant, and dismissed their troops, an act that saved untold Sidhe lives. Pastor John was later Canonized for his efforts.

As you make your way from Stage One to Stage Two, (the final), at the halfway point betwixt the two, you should see traces of this deluge which remain to this day.
