Das 1973 eröffnete Stadtmuseum Linz nimmt in der oberösterreichischen Museumslandschaft eine besondere Stellung ein: Es verfügt über eine reichhaltige Sammlung aus den Bereichen Kunst, Fotografie, Archäologie und Volkskunde. Das Museum befindet sich im Rathausviertel an der nach dem Bürgermeister Josef Dametz benannten Dametzstraße. Es wurde 1610 vom italienischen Baumeister Francesco Silva als Vorstadtpalais des Klosters Kremsmünster erbaut. Der Name NORDICO stammt aus der Zeit, als die Jesuiten das Haus als Collegium Nordicum für Schüler aus Skandinavien führten. Die Schließung des Internats erfolgte durch Josef II. 1911 erwarb die Stadt Linz das Gebäude, das immer wieder als Wohnhaus Verwendung fand.
Das NORDICO – ein vernetzter, lebendiger Ort des Geschichten-Erzählens und innovativer Museumsarbeit ist auch Lern- und Bildungsort und steht für Linzer Identität im stadtgeschichtlichen Kontext. Kontinuierlich produzierte Filmporträts von Zeitgenossen, eine Buchedition und die Kunst-und Kulturvermittlung sind wesentliche Bestandteile der Ausstellungen.

The Stadtmuseum Linz, which was opened in 1973, occupies a unique position in Upper Austria’s museum landscape because of its ample holdings in the areas of art, photography, archaeology and folk art. Located in the Town Hall precinct of Linz in Dametzstraße (named after Josef Dametz, mayor of Linz from 1914 to 1927), it was built in 1610 as a suburban mansion for the monastery in Kremsmünster by the Italian architect Francesco Silva. The name Nordico dates from an era when the Jesuits used the house as a boarding school for pupils from Scandinavian countries. The boarding school was shut down by Joseph II. In 1911 the city of Linz purchased the building, which has also seen intermittent residential use.
The Nordico – a vibrant and extensively networked place for telling stories and engaging in innovative museum work – is also a venue for learning and education. In the context of urban history it stands for Linz’s identity and continuity. The museum’s activities are rounded off with the continual production of film portraits of contemporary public figures and a series of publications.
