How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This cache will test your ability to work through seven forms of ciphers/decryption.

***
*** Note: The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates!
***

Using various encryption/unencryption web sites (examples would be www.braingle.com/brainteasers/codes, www.textmechanic.com/ROT13-Caesar-Cipher.html, www.practicalcryptography.com), and/or any/all mobile apps you might have available to you, work the conversions listed below to arrive at the real cache coordinates.

Pay close attention to detail of each step and keep a log of your progress to stay on track.

Note: For each decryption, remember that you are working 'backwards' to de-cipher/de-encrypt/etc. For some steps, you will need to utilize the 'decode' or 'decrypt' options (different tools use different labels/definitions).
I.E. Use the 'ciphertext' window, and 'decrypt' button when available, and your answer will appear in the 'plaintext' or 'cleartext' window.

Step 1. Decrypt(decode) this starting string of characters: scfyqohwiucvnkuf
using 'ROT13'. (leave shift at the standard 13)
(I used the www.practicalcryptography.com web site)
(The result string should start with 'fp....' and end with '....hs')

Step 2. Decrypt(decode) the result string of characters from 'Step 1' using 'Atbash'.
(I used the www.practicalcryptography.com web site)
(The result string should start with 'uk....' and end with '....sh')

Step 3. Decrypt(decode) the result string of characters from 'Step 2' using 'Affine'. Use '9' to set both A and B with this decryption.
(I used the www.practicalcryptography.com web site)
(The result string should start with 'hd....' and end with '....bu')

Step 4. Decrypt(decode) the result string of characters from 'Step 3' using 'Playfair'. Use 'Payton' for the key with this decryption.
ALSO ENSURE the "Omit Q" option is used, NOT the "replace j with i" option!
(Thank You Waterfallfrog for this 'key' informational requirement!)
(I used the www.braingle.com/brainteasers/codes web site)
(The result string should start with 'ic....' and end with '....nv')

Step 5. Decrypt(decode) the result string of characters from 'Step 4' using 'Caesar'. Use a shift right of 25 (or 'D to C') with this decryption.
(I used the www.practicalcryptography.com web site)
(The result string should start with 'jd....' and end with '....ow')

Step 6. Decrypt(decode) the result string of characters from 'Step 5' using 'Vigenere'. Use 'Walter' for the key with this decryption.
(I used the www.practicalcryptography.com web site)
(The result string should start with 'nd....' and end with '....dd')

Step 7. Rewrite the result of Step 6 (string of 16 letters) using the standard geocaching replacement technique of 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, etc., BUT with 3 EXCEPTIONS:
--- leave the 1st character alone (no conversion)
--- leave the 9th character alone (no conversion)
--- convert all 'z' characters to '0'(zeros)

The results of Step 7 are the actual cache coordinates (minus the usual spaces and decimal points).
Insert those for readability, then Go Find and Log the Cache!
