Swan Cottage was made to be a playhouse . It was originally built and placed at Springwood, FDR’s home, in the 1930’s. When the estate became a National Historic Site in 1945, the cottage was moved to Val-Kill. The structure was recently restored.
In her “My Day” column of August 21, 1942, Eleanor Roosevelt writes: “the four little girls decided that they wished to have a picnic lunch in what my mother-in-law named “The Swan Cottage” years ago. She built it as playhouse for her great-grandchildren. Nowadays it is used by the secret service men, who sit on the porch and keep their paraphernalia inside” … “So, when I had the guests at the big house for lunch, they (the little girls) took their own lunch and ousted the Secret Service for the time being.”
Did you know ... that the cottage originally had electricity and hot and cold running water?
