JoPo2010: This has gone missing a couple of times, and I've noticed a high number of transients in the area, so I've regretfully decided to archive this cache listing.

Geocache Description:

Nanaimo mine explosion on May 3, 1887

On this site, two explosions at the Vancouver Coal Company, Number One Mine, resulted in the deaths of 149 mineworkers and one rescuer. Nearly 150 children lost their fathers and 46 women became widows. It remains the worst mining accident in BC history.

Fifty-three of the miners were Chinese, but their names remain unknown due to the practice of assigning them only as payroll numbers. B.C. employers did not have to report the deaths of Chinese employees until 1897.

After the explosion, the mine re-opened, and produced 18 million tons of coal before permanently closing in 1938.
