Little Blue Grouse Mountain, (LBGM), although one of the lesser mountains in the southern Selkirks, stands apart from its neighbors both in physical location and geologic composition. A mere 30 air miles north from the Spokane city limits, Little Blue Grouse’s distinctive wedge-like profile juts up in isolation from the otherwise contiguous mountainous terrain between the Colville and Pend Oreille River valleys.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, designates the local area as the Buck Creek Cooperative Road Closure Unit. Therefore it is closed to motorized vehicle traffic of all kinds year-round.Looking to the east across the Pend Oreille River Valley you will see the spine of the 2 billion year old Priest River Core Complex which was once the west coast of the North American continent! Looking from south to north you can pick out Cook’s Mountain, King’s Mountain, South and North Baldy Mountains. As you return, observe Calispell Lake to the north, the last vestige of the mighty Glacial Lake Clark.
