Geocache Description:

This cache is to celebrate the A.F.D.R.E.(April Fool's Day River Excursion) and mark the location where a farmer's wife showed up with a shotgun one year.  The cache is an orange waterproof "necklace" type container with log and pencil accessible only by canoe or kayak.

Background:
Marv Bellknap and one of his friends decided on April Fool's Day, 1969, that it was a beautiful day to canoe down Duncan Creek. The concept was to canoe from Shady Pine bar in the morning.  Have lunch at Ojibwa or more recently at Glen Loch Saloon and then continue through Irving Park, past Leinienkugels Brewery and end up at the Ritz Bar where Duncan Creek dumps into the Chippewa River.  Marv has been doing it every year since. (editors note: Marvin died Sept 28, 2015 at age 79 so his string of A.F.D.R.E. trips has sadly ended)  It is a totally unorganized, unadvertised, unstructured annual event  on April Fool's day.  If you want to go, just show up.  Marv started telling his friends  how nice canoeing Duncan Creek was and soon there were quite a few canoes, kayaks, rafts and various other forms of water transportation showing up. Many participants would show up in interesting costumes.  On years where April 1 fell on a Saturday or Sunday, there could be over 100 people on the river.   Many of the participants were known to enjoy  adult beverages. This could cause quite a commotion on beautiful and normally quiet Duncan Creek.  After a few years the event became known as the  A.F.D.R.E.  or April Fool's Day River Excursion. This cache is to celebrate the tradition of paddling down Duncan Creek on April Fool's Day.

Cache Location Details:
The cache is located right were a large number of A.F.D.R.E. participants were told to leave the public waterway by gun point.  There is a farm house located on a high bank overlooking Duncan Creek.  This is where the old farmer's wife showed up wielding a shotgun requesting that we get off her property. Many of the participants were fortified and yelled back that it was public property and that she should give it up.  After this went on a while, a local Sheriff showed up and calmed her down. When searching for the cache don't forget to look up the bank and imagine having a shot gun waving at you. The following year custom T-Shirts were sold.  The front of the shirts had a picture of a granny holding a shotgun flipping the bird and the backs of the shirts had a large red target.

Directions:
In order to get to the cache location you will need to put in at one of the public boat landings, because the surrounding area is private property.  Which is the point  that the farmers wife thought she was making with a shotgun.   I suggest that you put in at the bridge near Duncan Creek Campground right near Shady Pine Bar and Grill (12938 100th Ave, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729). Head down stream to where the farm house overlooks the river. The log is an orange tube with only room for the log and a miniature pencil. Continue to the County Hwy S bridge or all the way to Glen Loch to take out.
