*** WB Historic Series FINAL - DuPont Row ***

This is final in a series of 7 caches highlighting historic places of Washburn, WI.

Boom times returned to the community during the World War I. The Barksdale Works of the DuPont Company employed upwards of 6,000 men and women in support of the war effort. Washburn's population allegedly peaked at 10,000 during the war and the community was hard pressed to provide housing and educational opportunities for the influx of new families. DuPont arranged for the construction of a significant amount housing in the community to alleviate the shortage of housing endured by its employees. While many remain on the City's East 3rd Street in what is called "DuPont Row" today, many were sold to the expanding Marshall -Wells Hardware Company and moved to Duluth, Minnesota after the war.

On 2013-08-23, East Third Street Residential Historic District was listed on the Wisconsin State Historical Register and on 2014-07-18 was listed on the National Historical Register. The following is taken from the Wisconsin Historical webpage, summarizing the District:

Both sides of East Third Street from Central Avenue to Fourth Avenue E, Washburn, Bayfield County. Dates of Construction: 1885-1950

Located northwest of Washburn’s historic commercial core, this district features tree-lined streets with landscaped lots of mown lawns, and ornamental shrubs and flowers. The homes represent continuous decades of construction from 1885 through 1950 representing a variety of architectural styles. Early houses are of the Queen Anne style as well as vernacular forms. Homes from the early twentieth century include the Bungalow, Craftsman and Prairie School and Period Revival styles. The resulting district constitutes a fine collection of Washburn’s architecturally significant residential buildings.

The DuPont Company was influential in this neighborhood because it constructed many homes for its employees here. These homes were well designed and contribute to the unique architectural character of the district.

The Barksdale Works of the DuPont Company closed in 1971.

Permission given for the hide on private property. TB's welcome. If you see the cacher-friendly owner out in the gardens, stop to say “Hi.”
