Geocache Description:

July seems to be a slow time of the year for social events. Is it the heat? Or the gosh darn humidity?! Let's hope it's both on this Saturday in the middle of summer.

Pewits Nest State Natural Area is off limits for cache placements, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy this gem of a find! Wear clothing that can get wet, flip flops, shorts, swimsuits. This secret grotto will temp you to wade in on the sandy-bottom of Skillet Creek to see the stunning waterfalls that are this SNA's "claim to fame"! Bring a camera, too!
You can also hike the trails up and along the gorge, perhaps even walk in the water downstream, to the final plunge pool at the mouth of the creeks's outflow.

We will provide a secure area to watch over any possessions you may want to remove before entering the water. We encourage you to bring the whole family, but it's your responsibility to watch them!

H.E. Cole wrote of the area: "At one time the jaws at the mouth of the nest supported a great iron shaft, a cumbersome overshot waterwheel. . . . Before the building of the mill, an individual lived in the solid sandstone, like a gnome in a cavern. His abode was some ten feet above a deep pool of water. This dwelling resembled the nest of a phoebe (or peewit, an earlier name for this bird), hence dubbed by early settlers the 'Peewit's Nest.'"
