Geocache Description:

Even though white-tailed deer are a very common resident of this park, there are many other species of deer that are not seen here. This cache is dedicated to one of those species.

The elk is one of the largest species of deer in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. This animal should not be confused with the larger moose to which the name "elk" applies in Eurasia. Apart from the moose, the only other member of the deer family to rival the elk in size is the south Asian sambar . Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark. Although native to North America and eastern Asia, they have adapted well to countries where they have been introduced, including Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Their great adaptability may threaten endemic species and ecosystems into which they have been introduced. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females. Elk are susceptible to a number of infectious diseases, some of which can be transmitted to livestock. Efforts to eliminate infectious diseases from elk populations, largely through vaccination, have had mixed success.

Cache is a small sized, clear container hidden in a typical manner. Please use stealth as you may be seen from the trail. Bring your own writing utensil. Hide back as found and properly concealed.

The cache is located not far from the trail so bushwhacking further than that is not necessary and is discouraged to reduce impact on the environment. Please replace as found. You must sign the logbook in order to claim credit for this find.

Please park at the coordinates shown in the Waypoint table and start your walk at the Trail head coordinates. There are other parking areas and trail access points available also.

Enjoy your walk, hike or bike ride along the "Purr Fect" trail. Plenty of nature's wonders to see along the way. We have placed other caches for you to find while you make your way along this trail!
