Geocache Description:

The Quest for Lewis and Clark

St. Charles, Missouri, served as the final embarkation point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. At noon on May 14, 1804, Clark and approximately 42 men docked at St. Charles, an outpost for traders dating from about 1769. St. Charles, the first permanent European settlement on the Missouri River and one of the first in the state of Missouri, was described as being "about 100 houses, the most of them small and indefferent and about 450 inhabitents Chiefly French, those people appear Pore, polite and harmonious" (DeVoto 1997, 4). Here Clark met with two more members of the expedition, Pierre Cruzatte and Francois Labiche, who served as boatmen and interpreters. While awaiting Lewis's arrival the men entertained the townspeople on the boats, danced at balls and attended a Mass conducted by a local priest.

Lewis arrived at 6:30pm on May 20 and the entire crew set out on their journey to the Pacific Ocean on May 21, 1804, to the sound of "three cheers" from the audience lining the riverbank. Clark noted in his journal that day:

. . . All the forepart of the day arranging our party and procureing the different articles necessary for them at this place. Dined with Mr. Ducett and set out at half passed three oClock under three cheers from the gentlemen on the bank and proceeded on . . . We camped in a bend at the Mo. of a small creek.

Come retrace the steps of Lewis and Clark on the banks of the Missouri River in Historic St. Charles. There are plenty of old shops and tons of restaurants to explore. There is something to do for each explorer in the family.

We are located less than 10 miles from Lambert St. Louis International Airport (STL). There are more that 30 hotels in the immediate area and many bed and breakfast businesses too. Please see Historic St. Charles Web Site for full details on lodging. We are still negotiating rates with the hotels so please be patient. More information will follow here and on our website, http://www.geowoodstock.com. Be sure to mention Geowoodstock when making your reservations.

Due to a City Ordinance, there will be no pets allowed in the park. All other areas are fine but Frontier Park has a strict ordinance. Sorry...

The 2 camping locations closest to the event are Sundermeier RV and Lakeside 370 Park

Geowoodstock XII (2014) Travel Bug Guidelines

Based on growth of previous Geowoodstock’s, we are expecting 4,000 to 6,000 trackables through the TB Area. To accommodate this level of activity in a fairly short period, the following guidelines will be used.

There will be no registering of TB numbers into or out of the Travel Bug area.

It is the responsibility of the cacher who logged the TB/coin into the event to either drop it at the TB area or pass it on to another cacher.  It is also the responsibility of the cacher who retrieves the TB/coin to log it properly in a timely manner.

As the owner of a TB or coin dropped into the event, it is up to you to contact the person who plans to bring your TB/coin about any concerns you may have.

The TB TRADERS will be asked to:

  1. Put the individual TBs into a ziploc baggie (replace if in bad shape)
  2. Print out the bug sheet for each TB, insert into baggie
  3. Put a small slip of paper inside the baggie and Give it one of several mission labels listed below for ease of sorting - WHERE the TB WANTS TO GO!! If it wants a particular state, list that as well.
  4. You will receive 1 ticket for each TB you bring there will be NO prize raffle, this will allow you to take the same number of TB’s during the day on Saturday until 3 pm.
  5. As you leave the TB area: You will be asked to turn in 1 ticket for each TB you are taking.
  6. Those not having brought TB’s will get the opportunity to pick up a limited number TB’s after 3:30pm on Saturday until all TB’s are dispensed.
  7. DISCOVER LOGS of TB’s in the TB area will be discouraged due to the high volume of TBs and cachers expected. There will be a limited number of large TB’s set aside whose owners have requested Discover logs.  These will be available for pick up after 3pm on Saturday at the owner’s discretion.
