North To Nelson!
The Great Northern Rail Trail extends from Salmo, past Nelson, and on to Troup, following the former Nelson and Fort Sheppard railway. The rail bed is level (more or less), but some portions of it are better traveled than others, so the ground varies from groomed gravel to overgrown weeds. It is a great trail for walking or cycling, and in the winter, X-country skiing or snowshoeing. ATV or motorbikes are allowed in this area, but please keep your speed DOWN!
During the shooting of the movie Out Cold in 2000 in Salmo, the character played by Lee Majors landed a little plane on the adjacent highway. Don't know if there was too much apple cider involved, but things didn't go according to script as the rumours go. Accordingly, they had to use the first take. PLEASE TAKE CARE IN RETRIEVING AND PUTTING BACK CACHE -- WE DON'T WANT BROKEN PARTS, but also please enjoy.
