Miners Bay on Mayne Island was one of the earliest settlements established in the Southern Gulf Islands. Gold miners en route from Vancouver Island to the mainland would stop over before rowing across Georgia Straight. By the mid 1800's a community formed at Miner's Bay, including critical infrastructure such as a hotel, tavern and jail. Today Miner's Bay serves as "downtown" for Mayne Island residents, weekenders and tourists.
