Geocache Description:

Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 am till 5:00 pm.

Geocachers everywhere are invited to the 8th annual fall picnic sponsored by GONIL (NOTE: This is the 13th annual Chicagoland area geocaching picnic!!)

Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Bring your muggle friends, too!
  • Plan to come early (10am) and stay late (5pm).
  • Bring food and your favorite geocaching stories to share.
  • Don't forget your GPS so you can find a cache or two (or twenty?) Friendly geocachers have been busy beavers placing new caches in the area!
GONIL will provide…
  • New caches to find
  • Hot dogs, hamburgers, brats* and the fixin’s to go along with those
  • Napkins, plates, forks, knives, etc.
  • * If you want to bring a specific item for the grill, feel free to bring it! We will find room on the grill. (i.e. a non-meat alternative)
POTLUCK! Because Variety is the Spice of Picnic:
Please bring a dish/beverage to share according to the first letter of your real last name using the following list:
  • A-I bring a side (salad, chips, fruit, etc.)
  • J-Q bring beverages (water, juice boxes, etc.)
  • R-Z bring a desert
  • Use this as a guideline. If you make something exceptionally well bring that. Feel free to post a note as to what you are bringing.
Cupcakes for Courage
Cupcakes for Courage is the brain child of Kathryn and Laura Pekarik, two sisters that share the same passion for baking and want to share that passion with the world one cupcake at a time. Kathryn was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins T-cell Lymphoma in May of 2010. Later that year, a benefit was held in her honor to help defray the costs of her medical care. To contribute, Laura baked 250 cupcakes to host a bake sale at the event. There were four unique and delicious flavors to choose from; all of which were personally created. The cupcakes received such rave reviews that friends and family were requesting them by the dozen!

BYO…
  • Tables, Chairs, Picnic Blankets
  • Pop up canopies or shelters for shade (or in case it rains)
LOCATION! Return to the City:
  • Schiller Woods in Chicago
PARK RULES! Besides "have fun":
  • Alcohol is allowed, but no glass bottles. So transfer containers, or bring cans.
  • GeoPets are welcomed, but please keep them on leash
  • Fires must be built only in grills (not provided).
  • Trash must be placed in containers (provided).
  • Schiller Woods closes at dusk.
Woohoo, Fun! Some details on the schedule of events:
  • Closest to the Pin Contest
  • Just use your GPS to pick a spot anywhere within Schiller Woods North or South (so, the preserve bordered by Montrose on the north, and Belmont on the south). Submit your coordinates, and the closest to the pre-selected pin will win a prize. Easy-breezy – everyone can enter. Look for an entry form on the sign-in table.
  • Split the Pot Raffle Who doesn’t like money? Volunteers will be wandering around during the event selling chances to “split the pot” with GONIL. There will be raffle “pots” going for $1, $5, and $10. For example, if the $10 pot sells 50 tickets, you could be looking at $250 coming to you. Not bad!
  • Face Painting with Kerri StocktonYour child can have their face decorated and painted for fun!
  • Games! We have a few games planned for the kids and a fun one for our adults as well.
  • 2013 Travel Bug Race The amazing Wascozookeeper is coordinating this year’s Travel Bug Race. Please see the GONIL forum (http://www.gonil.org/SMF/index.php/topic,7804.0.html) for more details). We will have travel tags available for last-minute sale at the merchandise tent, but please purchase and prepare your travel bug in in advance if at all possible!
NOTE: If you are entering the Travel Bug race:
• Get your TB tag early - order them from Groundspeak, order them from one of the many geocaching supply sites, get one from another geocacher, ask if there are any available at events you go to.
• Pick a name for your racer - nothing is more boring than having a half-dozen entrants named "Travel Bug Tag".
• Activate your tag on geocaching.com!
• Create your travel bug page - if your bug has a story, here's the place to tell it. Tell everyone it's in a race and give the race dates (race ends 9/1/2014). Have mercy on your racemeister and don't go crazy with fonts and colors - I've got to look at 60 or more of these pages every month.
• Take your bug's picture and upload it to the TB page - make sure you check the box that says that it's the "default image" for your traveler.
• Make sure your traveler is "race-ready" - tag securely attached? All parts securely attached? Extraneous tags, goal sheets, etc., kept SMALL and to a minimum number?
• "Drop" your bug into the picnic event cache
