Olympian Gods: Poseidon Mystery Cache

***This cache is a part of a multiple puzzle mega cache that started being created all over Greece in 2011 called 'Olympian Gods'. However, it can be found separately as a puzzle cache.***

According to the Arcadean mythology, the god Poseidon, the protector of seas, waves and all water world, was born in Arcadea and was the patron god of Mantinea. In a place previously called Mantinea, there were The Springs of Arnis (perhaps today’s Springs of Kamari or Karitaina). According to the myth it was the place where the ancient Goddess Rea went secretly to give birth to Poseidon, in order to hide him from his father Cronos (as he ate his children to maintain his reign and avoid the risk of having to pass it on to them). Poseidon means “Earth’s Husband” and he was Goddess Dimitra’s husband.

Poseidon was also the protector God of the Horses as the ancients believed that he created and tamed them. They honored him with horse races and the offerings that were sacrificed to him were horses and bulls.

This forbidden temple was off limits to all commoners except once a year when a highly regarded priest was allowed to carry out the appropriate secret ceremonies away from the sight of others who were only allowed in the outer area.

There were many Temples of Poseidon in Arcadia similar to the one you will encounter in Mantineia (the Poseidon of Horses), such as the ones in the city of Methidrion, in Tegea, in Tricolonon, etc.

The container is a film canister placed out of the archaeological site. It contains a logbook and declarations sheet. No pen inside. You must bring writing material.

Σύμφωνα με την Αρκαδική μυθολογία ο Ποσειδώνας, ο θεός των θαλασσών και των κυμάτων και γενικά των νερών γεννήθηκε στην Αρκαδία και ήταν προστάτης της Μαντίνειας. Εκεί, στην Μαντίνεια, όπου υπήρχε η Πηγή της Άρνης (ίσως η σημερινή πηγή Καμάρι ή Καρύταινα λεγόμενη), λένε πως πήγε η παλαιότατη θεότητα Ρέα και γέννησε τον Ποσειδώνα, κρυφά από τον πατέρα του Κρόνο (που έτρωγε τα παιδιά του για να μην του πάρουν την εξουσία!). Το όνομά του στην κυριολεξία σημαίνει «σύζυγος της γης» Και υπήρξε όντως σύντροφος της Μεγάλης Μητέρας Δήμητρας.

Ο Ποσειδών πέρα από θεός της θάλασσας ήταν και θεός τον αλόγων (Ἵππιος Ποσειδῶν), μάλιστα οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες πίστευαν πως ο Ποσειδώνας δημιούργησε και εξημέρωσε τα άλογα, και γι' αυτό τον τιμούσαν και με ιπποδρομίες καθώς και τα δώρα που συνήθως του θυσίαζαν ήταν άλογα και ταύροι.

Ο σπουδαίος ναός υπήρξε άβατο και μόνον μια φορά το χρόνο ένας πάνσεπτος ιερέας τελούσε τα μυστήρια προς τιμή του Ποσειδώνα, μακριά από τα μάτια των πιστών.

Ιερά του Ποσειδώνα είχαν ιδρυθεί πολλά στην Αρκαδία, όπως αυτό που θα δείτε εδώ στην Μαντινεία (του Ιππίου Ποσειδώνα), στην πόλη του Μεθυδρίου, των Τρικολώνων, στην Τεγέα κ.λ.π.

Η κρύπτη είναι ένα κουτάκι φιλμ τοποθετημένο έξω από τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο. Περιέχει logbook, declaration sheet. Δεν έχει στυλό.
