Geocache Description:

A Taroona cache, probably best accessed by walking north along the beach after parking at the bottom of Melinga Place, or if school’s not on, park in the High School car park. Or walk south from Karingal Crt

On 24th December 1830, the Colonial Times featured an advertisement for “The Retreat” tearooms, which stood on the small headland now occupied by the Taroona High School.  It was described as “a place of Public Accommodation and Amusement, similar to the most respectable Tea Gardens near the British Metropolis”.   Among the attractions were:
  • Gardens and pleasure grounds
  • Bowling green
  • Cricket ground
  • Fruit, in its season, in great variety
  • Boats for fishing, and
  • A dairy
  • Good apartments

There is a watercolour entitled “Retreat, River Derwent” by Mary Morton Allport (1832?)

The area was later part of “Retreat Farm”, until 1953 when the Education Department began to buy parcels of land for the planned Taroona State High School.

This cache (our first!) is closer to the site of “The Retreat” than where the painting was made. Access north past Retreat Cove is restricted due to landslip and/or rock falls; you don’t need to venture on to the more northerly beach.
