Hoch Family Ranch

Hoch Ranch is my mother's family ranch and was started in 1936 when my great grandparents, Harry and Kathleen Hoch, bought the land on the Medina River. Shortly after, they built what we call the White House, the house in which my grandmother grew up.

In the 1950s after my grandmother graduated from UT and married my grandfather, they built a second house on the ranch and this is where my mom lived for a good bit of her childhood before they moved into San Antonio. Years later, my grandmother would return to the ranch for her retirement. When I was a kid, we would come visit here every summer.

Then in 2003, when my mom retired from the Air Force, my parents moved down to the ranch from Virginia to begin construction on their retirement home: a berm-style, earth-sheltered home my sisters and I call the "Hobbit House." It is located just northwest of this cache and is visible if you are driving east from LaCoste, though more so in the winter.

To see more about the Hobbit House, you can view this video for a tour. Thanks for stopping by!
