Welcome to the Black River Falls School Forest. If you are lucky enough to have an elementary age child, he or she will no doubt be able to tell you all about some of the outdoor learning they have done at the school forest. The elementary students enjoy everything from forestry education to building shelter, snowshoeing to lumberjack olympics and creative writing to campfire safety.
The Black Fiver Falls School Forest is located within the Black River Falls School District and is surrounded by Jackson County forest land. The school forest consists of 40 acres and is located in the Town of Brockway. In 1967 Jackson County transferred power of the 40 acre parcel to the City of Black River Falls and the Towns of Adams, Albion and Brockway for use as a public dumping ground. Resolutions pased in 1974 by the Towns of Adams, Albion and Brockway allowed the land to be used as a school forest. Land use agreements between the school district and Jackson County have been signed since 1977 allowing the school district use of the surrounding county forest land. A School Forest Advisory Committee was created in 2002 and strives to continue natural resource management and improve educational programming on the land.
You are looking for a plastic ammo can. Cache contains a log and kid friendly swag. There is a wide trail that heads to the right once past the gate. That is the easiest way to the pond. There is another trail to the left side of the large clearing. This trail gets quite soggy, but is a fun and fairly easy snowshoeing trail. Don't let the gate at the road fool you, the property is open to the public.
