Geocache Description:

Sirius(ly), The (HOT) Dog Days of Summer

When: Friday August 2nd from 7pm-9pm

Where: 12337 Rt. 59 Plainfield IL

Webster defines the “dog days” as “that period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere”. Some English calendars now list it as the period from July 3-August 11. Many of us hide out in our air conditioned homes and condos and wait for the temperatures to settle down a bit.

The term dates back to the ancient Romans who were believed to be the first to notice that Sirius (the “dog star”) would rise and set with the sun during this late summer time. The brightest star in the night sky is Sirius from Canis Major, a constellation mapped out by our European ancestors. They identified two images of dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor (hold your applause), “canis” from the Latin word meaning “dog”.

Some ancient cultures sacrificed a brown dog at the start of the “dog days” to appease the rage of Sirius. It was believed that the earth received heat from this star and that it was an evil time when the sea boiled, dogs grew mad and it caused man fevers, hysterics and frenzies. We know today that the summer heat is simply a result of the earth’s tilt.

All being said, plain and simple…It’s pretty hot out! To celebrate the coming of the Dog Star, CanisMinor cordially invites you to join other cachers for an evening of dogs – Hot Dogs* that is. This establishment is the newest thing in fashionable hot dogs and other sinful treats in the Chicago area. If you love all things deep fried, (ah-hem Bacon & Twinkies) this place is for you. If you love trying unusual flavor combinations, this place is for you. If you’ve never had a gourmet milkshake, this place is for you. If you love BACON, well you get the picture. Their gourmet spin on the simple little sausage we call the hot dog has taken the Plainfield area by storm.

Come on out and see what all the talk is about. Try something you never had before. At the very least you’ll get a chance to talk with fellow cachers and meet some new ones.

We’ll be there from 7-9pm and a group picture will be taken at 8pm.

Please RSVP by July 31st just for a head count.

If you’d like to place caches for this event, please contact me so i can post them here

Did I mention Bacon and Twinkies?

(* no actual “dogs” will be sacrificed – brown or other).
