This cache serves as a tribute to all men and women, past and present who have served our great nation.
The location of the cache was chosen as a tribute to Joseph Demers who resided in Lowell for most of his adult life until his passing. Joseph enlisted in the US Army in August of 1940 at the age of 21. At this point, WWII was almost a year old and the United States had no official role in the war. He served stateside for the first 13 months of duty and then in September of 1941 he was transferred to a base in the US Territory of Hawaii in what became known as the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Based in Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to Tripler Army General Hospital. His transfer took place less than three months before the infamous December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. For his service, Joseph received several awards including a Bronze Star.
After his passing, the City of Lowell named this square in his honor.

Tripler Army Medical Center is still in Hawaii. It is not however the same building or location. Tripler General Hospital was part of Fort Shafter. Tripler AMC moved to its current location in 1948. This coral pink building can also be seen in the opening of the more recent Hawaii 5-0 television series. The following was excerpted from Wikipedia:
Tripler Army Medical Center is the headquarters of the Pacific Regional Medical Command of the armed forces administered by the United States Army in the state of Hawaii. It is the largest military hospital in the Asian and Pacific Rim region and serves a military sphere of jurisdiction that spans over 52% of the Earth's surface. Located on the slopes of Moanalua Ridge overlooking the Honolulu neighborhoods of Moanalua and Salt Lake, Tripler Army Medical Center's massive coral pink structure can be seen from any point in the Honolulu District.
