Schuyler Colfax, Jr., had been Speaker of the House before serving under President Grant. He is one of only two Americans to have served as both Speaker and as Vice-President. In 1854 Colfax was initiated as a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at DePauw University without ever having attended that or any other university. After becoming involved in a scandal involving a railroad and a construction company, he was not renominated to run as vice-president with Grant.
