The trail to Hermit Meadows climbs for 2.8 km, cresting above the treeline at the moraines from the glaciers above. At this spot in the sub-alpine, the rotting remains of Hermit Hut can be seen above and to the left in the trees. Hermit Hut was built by Swiss Guides after they arrived in 1899. It was used as a base hut for climbs to Mount Tupper, Mt. Rogers, and the Swiss Peaks. The hut was still in use when I first hiked this trail, but is now decommissioned. The end of the hike is not far above, a steep trail through the meadows.
