The area north of central Nairobi forms a drainage basin which was once heavily forested, but exists today only as patches like Karura Forest and City Park. The Karura Forest is cut by four rivers flowing eastwards - the Thigirie, Getathuru, Rui Ruaka and Karura Rivers, which are all tributaries of the Nairobi River, the main river of the Nairobi river basin.
The Nairobi River Basin consists of three major rivers (Nairobi, Ngong, and Mathare) whose catchments are found within the Kikuyu and Limuru Hills. All of the Nairobi River Basin rivers join east of Nairobi and meet the Athi River, eventually flowing to the Indian ocean. These basin rivers are mostly narrow and highly polluted. The Nairobi River skirts the northern city centre, where it is partly canalized. Nairobi's rivers suffer from multiple contaminations by agriculture, slums and industrial areas. Some river banks are also infamous for insecurity. Proper crossings on these rivers are few and far between, resulting in a divided city.

The falls are found on the Karura River and are about 500m upstream from the Mau Mau Caves which can be accessed by a river-side trail on the north bank.
