DO NOT COME AFTER THIS CACHE, unless you have a good 4x4, have read the maps and know the area, are comfortable without trails, and most of all, love these old lookout sites, 'cause this one's a beauty!
This is the first joint Estacadians and Wolffbudz hide. The road in is bad, and there is no trail to the top. The best way to the parking area is off the 4220. It looks shorter to come from the North, but it's not. We went out that way and, well, it's just not.
Rex's Lookout Page has a cabin on top, but we couldn't find any remains. However, we didn't explore the true high spot very much as we were headed to a spot you can see very well with Google Earth on the Western top. The views from here are awesome and so is the relic we found. You don't find many intact phone boxes on summits anymore. Ruddy Hill has one, GC3T6JZ, but that one has seen better days, as did Burnt Granite,
GC35NQR, but there's nothing left of it. So it was a real treat to find one in such good condition. We followed the phone line that runs South as far as we could, and wondered where the line that ran West went.
All and all, it's not a hard climb from the parking area. Probably about a mile up. The D/T stars are for the whole adventure from the pavement. Difficulty is just getting there, and terrain is , just that, terrain. You are going to the top of a mountain after all.The parking area also serves as access to the PCT, but it just winds around the bottom of the butte.
