Laajalahden luonnonsuojelualue on Etelä-Suomen parhaita lintuvesiä ja myös kansainvälisesti arvokas. Se on rauhoitettu turvaamaan lintujen pesimis- ja levähdyspaikkoja. Täällä voi nähdä ja kuulla monenlaisia lintuja. Alue on erittäin suosittu lintujen tarkkailupaikka etenkin muuttoaikoina. Valtaosa Laajalahden luonnonsuojelualueesta on avovettä. Viime vuosina lahdella on pesinyt noin 300 vesilintuparia sinisorsan, haapanan ja silkkiuikun ollessa kolme yleisintä lajia. Suojelualueen metsät ovat pääosin joko lehtoja tai luhtaisia lehtimetsiä. Linnustoltaan lehdot ovat monipuolisia. Myös hiukan erikoisempi, mutta silti aika tunnettu lintu, Angry Bird, on juuri kuoriutunut munastaan ja piileskelee nyt jossakin aivan lähellä. ;) Laulutaiturit satakieli, lehtokerttu ja mustapääkerttu ovat rehevien lehtojen jokavuotisia kesävieraita. Alueella on myös kaksi lintutornia, joista toinen luontopolun varrella Villa Elfvikin lähellä ja toinen Otaniemen puolella, Konemiehentieltä lähtevän polun varrella. Laajalahti is one of the best bird wetlands within the Helsinki-Espoo-Vantaa metropolis. It is a fantastic place to observe birds both during migration and at other times. The nature reserve’s trails and bird watching towers offer the perfect services for a day trip. For the most part Laajalahti Nature Reserve consists of open water. There are also a broad reed bed and shoreline groves and meadows. It is an important area for the plentiful nesting population in the region and for the thousands of birds which stop there during spring and autumn migration in April-May and August-September. Also the famous - but kind of a strange bird - called Angry Bird has just hatched from its egg and is now hiding somewhere for you to find it!! ;)
There are two bird watching towers in the nature reserve. One of the towers is on the nature trail near Villa Elfvik and the other at Otaniemi on the trail which begins at Konemiehentie road. A trail leading through reed beds is also a good place to observe birds. The reserve is a very popular spot to go bird watching, especially during migration in spring and autumn.
