Geocache Description:

Let's get together to commerate Astronaut Rick Mastracchio's voyage to the International Space Station with a Geocaching Travel Bug.  Every geocacher who attends a Geocaching Event on November 6 or 7, 2013 will be awarded a “Geocaching in Space” souvenir.

Since everything in America's last frontier is extreme, DR-AK and I wanted to make this an extreme event.  We tried to figure out a way for all of us to fly to the ISS with Rick Mastracco, but obviously that's not possible; I mean someone needs to stay back here on Earth to keep things going.  So we figured the next best thing is to launch rockets!  Yup, you heard right.  How long has it been since you've launced a model rocket?  For me, it's been well over 20 years, so I'm psyched!

DR-AK and I went to the Anchorage House of Hobbies on Spenard, and they have a nice selection of very reasonably priced rockets and motors.  I bought a launcher.  You can buy one as well if you want, or use mine.  You can get a ready-to-fly (RTF) kit with three motors, ignitors, and wadding for under $40.  If RTF is not your thing, they also have kits that can be assembled and painted over a couple of evenings.  To make things more interesting, I bought a rocket capable of flying an egg.  If you bring a small trackable, geocoin, or other swag smaller than an egg, I'm willing launch it into space for you (well not quite space, but to about 600' anyway).  I have three extra motors for this purpose and they are about $4 each; bringing a motor with your swag would be helpful.  The rocket takes a B6-4 motor.

You don't have to fly a rocket to enjoy this event and get the souvineer; spectators are welcome and since you attended the event you are still eligible for the souvineer.  So plan to come on out and watch the launches, enjoy some fellowship, and earn a hard to get souvineer.  See you there!

Join us at 1400 on Nov. 6th; launch will be at 1415. Sorry for the middle of the day event, but we need daylight to recover the rockets.
