Geocache Description:

IBCrashen's Grassy Point II and the $1,000,000 Tunnel tells the first part of the story of Grassy Point - how it was the original Park Point, and about its legacy of tons of wood waste, until the sawmills at Grassy Point burned in the fires of 1918.

The second part of the story is a bit more uplifting. Restoration activities at Grassy Point started in 1998, with the removal of 11,000 cubic yards of wood waste, which was up to 16' deep in places. The restoration also relocated Keene Creek to its original channel, and led to the construction of a network of trails, floating boardwalks and observation decks, making it a great spot for hiking, birding and observing wildlife.

The site is in the final stages of engineering the design for construction of an expanded island, a renewed stream channel, and improved spawning and over-winter fish habitat. Sediment samples are being analyzed to ensure structural integrity. Pre- and post-restoration sediment samples will help verify improved environmental habitat and successful removal of impacts to the site.

Prior to settlement, Grassy Point was a rich estuarine wetland. Sheltered bay habitat is considered the most important habitat type to restore in the estuary. The restored stream channel and delta will provide spawning habitat for game fish such as muskellunge, northern pike, smallmouth bass, bluegill and black crappie, as well as habitat for critical forage species such as white sucker, shorthead redhorse and silver redhorse.

The cache is a short walk down the boardwalk and should be easily found, with room for coins and small trade items. Take a hike further down the boardwalk to check out this neat area, and you might as well seek out the other cache while you're here!
