Eräänä lumituiskuisena iltana mestarisalapoliisi Sherlock Holmes istui lempituolissaan nauttien takan lämmöstä kunnes puhelin soi. Puhelu tuli naapurikartanolta. Soittaja vaikutti hyvin kiihtyneeltä ja kertoi että talossa oli tapahtunut murha.
Sherlock tempaisi lampaanvillaisen viittansa harteilleen, otti ulos mennessään deerstalker hattunsa naulakosta ja paukautti oven perässään kiinni.
Kartanolle päästyään hän oli pikaisten kuulustelujen jälkeen saanut selville seuraavat tosiasiat:
Kaikki neljä henkilöä olivat viettäneet Wilburin nimipäiväjuhlia. Jonkun oli täytynyt auttaa murhaajaa ja hänen täytyi olla vanhempi kuin uhri. One snowy night master detective Sherlock Holmes sat in his favorite chair while enjoying the warmth of the fireplace until the phone rang. Call came from the neighboring manor. The caller seemed very frantig and told to Sherlock that there had been a murder. Sherlock pulled the sheep's wool cloak to shoulder, took a deerstalker hat and slams the door behind her.
After interrogation he found out the following facts:
All four people had spent Wilburs name day celebration. Someone had to help the murderer and he had to be older than the victim. The manor housemaid Hester and she or he who helped the murderer had not been of the same sex. Cedric Butler was oldest of a serving staff. The youngest and the victim were not of the same sex. The murderer could not have even the youngest of the service staff. Also gardener was younger than cook Beulah.
Sherlock already knew who was the murderer.
Calculate the victims names second letters value (A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc.), callers last letter of the name , helpers name of the third and the second last letter of the murderer values together.
