The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
This book was written by C.S. Lewis and published in 1950. The book begins with the four siblings – Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie who evacuate London during World War 2 and off to a strange house in the country. The find a passageway to the magical land of Narnia through an old wardrobe in the house. As soon as they enter Narnia they see a lamppost and meet all kinds of talking animals and find out that their brother Edmund has been captured by the White Witch. Peter, Susan and Lucy join with the Narnians in their battle against the White Witch, hoping to rescue their brother Edmund. Soon they meet Aslan, a lion and the champion of the Narnians. Using ancient magic, Aslan sacrifices himself to save the Narnians shortly before the big battle. What happens next? You’ll have to read the book to find out if Aslan is able to triumph over the White Witch.
I read this book many times when I was a child. I love a good adventure! I used to imagine that when I’d come across a lamppost that would mean I’d managed to get to Narnia. This story is a beautiful tale of forgiveness, redemption and sacrifice. And who doesn’t like a good tale where good triumphs over evil?
About this series
When I initially sat down and started writing down the titles of classic children’s books I soon found a very long list. I decided to limit myself to some that are books that I actually read when I was a child, most of which I read several times, and loved. I still had a hard time narrowing down my search. There are so many fabulous books out there and the classics are still read for a reason, they’re great literature! So dust off your library card and go check out some of these wonderful books. I am initially hiding 9 caches for the Waukesha Janboree and it was not easy to only choose 9 classic books. Maybe you could include in your log whether or not you’ve read the book and what you took away from it.
