Geocache Description:

Charlotte's Web

This book was written by E.B. White and published in 1952. This book tells the tale of a pig named Wilbur, who is the runt of the litter. The farmer’s daughter, Fern, adopted him and he was her pet. He soon moved to the next farm. He begins to fear that he will end up being a meal for the farmer and pleads for help. Help comes in the form of a spider named Charlotte who becomes his friend. She begins to weave words into her web to try and save his life. He ends up going to the county fair with a few of his farm friends. How does Wilbur fare at the fair? Does Charlotte save his life? What about Charlotte’s life? You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens to Wilbur and Charlotte.

This is a fun story that young readers have enjoyed for years, there are few children who make it through elementary school without hearing it. The friendship that Charlotte offers to Wilbur is selfless and compassionate. Wilbur has a lot of anxieties and appreciates the friendships he makes. I always admired the compassion and patience that you see from Charlotte.

About this series

When I initially sat down and started writing down the titles of classic children’s books I soon found a very long list. I decided to limit myself to some that are books that I actually read when I was a child, most of which I read several times, and loved. I still had a hard time narrowing down my search. There are so many fabulous books out there and the classics are still read for a reason, they’re great literature! So dust off your library card and go check out some of these wonderful books. I am initially hiding 9 caches for the Waukesha Janboree and it was not easy to only choose 9 classic books. Maybe you could include in your log whether or not you’ve read the book and what you took away from it.

This cache was hidden for the 2014 Waukesha Janboree. Permission has been given by the Waukesha City Parks and Rec for the placement of this geocache. Please be respectful of the environment and remember that this is a very high traffic area and you will need to be stealthy so that the geocache isn’t muggled.
