SLAF is an acronym for the types of businesses that have been located in the building near this cache location: Skating, Lumber, Appliances and Furniture.
Back in the seventies, this location was home to twin ice skating rinks that a New York NHL team once used as its practice facility. Once that establishment closed, the building was taken over by a lumber/home improvement company that was comparable to today’s big box giants. After that came a well-known appliance superstore, whose prices were “Tops” and whose TV ads were acted out by puppets and often featured the word “loser!” After a fairly good run, this chain wound up the same way that most high-volume discount appliance/electronics stores of that era did – financial problems and bankruptcy. The building stood empty for a while and then was taken over by its current tenant – an upscale department store’s furniture outlet center.
I have been inside this building for all four of its iterations and I’m always impressed by the sheer size of the place. It’s huge! I find it ironic that today there is a big-box home improvement store right across from this location and a thriving ice skating rink just a short distance down the road. Go figure.
