Geocache Description:

From this spot you can view a stand of old oak trees. In the early days of our Capitol City this site was used for public hangings. Events were festive- families gathered along the banks and picnicked while the gruesome ritual took place.

Wheelchair accessible if not disturbed, although distance from legally parked car might be an issue.

The last known public hanging was a double hanging for the murder of Daniel Delany in 1865. I always found this piece of history fascinating, as Oregon was known for its prejudice towards minorities (which the murderers attempted to use in their favor) and the first witness to come forward was a black young man. Thankfully he was believed and his life spared. An account of the crime, hanging and general festivities is linked to this page.
