Taj Mahal
AD1632
Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India

Welcome to the NEW Seven Wonders of the World Series. New7Wonders of the World was an initiative started in 2000 as a Millennium project to choose Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. It was a popularity poll and the Foundation claimed that more than 100 million votes were cast through the Internet or by telephone. Winners were announced in 2007.

The TAJ MAHAL is a white marble mausoleum built by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess, died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later.
