BRADFORD CITY WATER AUTHORITY - HEFFNER RESERVOIR

"IMAGINE a landscape of forested mountains, clear flowing streams, a fantastic array of trees, shrubs and wildflowers, wildlife of all varieties; a place where the beauty of natural balance prevails; a place where the community, the landowners and the land users work together to facilitate this balance; a place where local ingenuity, a strong connection to the land and voluntary stewardship have combined for the benefit of these people and their paradise. Sound far-fetched? Not if you hunt or live near the 74,000-acre Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative (KQDC) in northwest McKean County, where such a landscape has been in the works since 1998. Folks in Bradford have a history of being forward thinkers. During the oil rush of the early 19th Century, deciding to guarantee their water supply, the townfolk built the precursors to what's now the Heffner Reservoir. They valued the resource, they knew it was important and they knew it was possible to spoil it. So they set aside a share of land in the watershed and protected it, thus ensuring an ample supply of clean water for their community long into the future. Now they are protecting their forests, their livelihood and their recreational traditions." GC1678F

"In 1950, the city applied for and was granted water allocations to withdraw water from the North Branch of Sugar Run and the West Branch of Tunugnwant Creek. Following receipt of these allocations, persons involved with the operation of the water system became concerned that the proposed points of withdrawal might become contaminated from the upstream operation of portions of the Bradford Oil Fields. In 1955 the two points of water withdrawal were abandoned and a decision was made to construct a new reservoir on the West Branch of the Tunungwant Creek above Kissem Run. This is the site of Reservoir Number 5, now known as Heffner Reservoir. When it came time to acquire land and construct the Heffner Reservoir, the City of Bradford recognized that it did not have sufficient financial resources to construct a facility of the magnitude being proposed. Therefore, in 1955 the Bradford City Water Authority was created and charged, as its initial project, with the acquistion of the land, planning and construction of the proposed new reservoir." This multi-cache  has the first two stages as physical containers, the third stage is coordinates only and the final is an ammo can. This should be a nice easy walk with a beautiful view at the end. Make sure to bring a camera with you.
