Midden in het Horsterwold ligt De Stille Kern.

Er lopen nagenoeg geen paden, hooguit kun je er sporen vinden die het wild, paarden en runderen daar in het ruige natuurgebied hebben getrokken.

Na de inpoldering was dit gebied oorspronkelijk voorbestemd voor de akkerbouw.

De bestemming is ondertussen gewijzigd. In 1996 is het aan Staatsbosbeheer overgedragen met als doel om in het gebied nieuwe natuur te ontwikkelen. Sindsdien mag de natuur er haar eigen gang gaan..

Oude wegen zijn overwoekerd.

Het is al een flinke wildernis geworden.

Wandelaars mogen er naar hartelust rondstruinen.

Een welgemeend advies hierbij: trek laarzen en een lange broek aan, want je zult je soms een weg door de hier en daar behoorlijk stekelige struiken moeten banen, terwijl het onkruid, zoals brandnetels, in de zomermaanden op veel plaatsen in het bos welig kunnen tieren.

Maar wat is het er mooi!

In het gebied zie je wat een geweldig mooi plaatje de grote grazers er van hebben gemaakt.

De afwisseling van grazige weiden, waterpartijen, groepen struiken en bos zijn een lust voor het oog.

Paden zijn hier bijna niet zodat je voor het uitzetten van een route weinig aan de digitale topokaart hebt.

Toch kun je daarop wel zien waar de perceelscheidingen tussen de verschillende soorten inplant van loofbomen zich bevinden.

Bovendien zie je op de kaart de open plekken en de waterpartijen, zodat het wel enigzins mogelijk is om een ruwe GPS track uit te zetten.

De verfijning van de route, in verband met de begaanbaarheid en de obstakels in het bos, zoals omgevallen bomen, te dichte struiken en moerassen, moet in de ruwe praktijk tijdens het struinen plaats vinden.

Daarbij heb je veel nut van de sporen die door het wild, paarden en runderen door het ruige natuurgebied zijn getrokken.

Het blijkt dat de dieren heel goed in staat zijn om obstakels in het bos te ontwijken.

Andere dieren volgen ook deze sporen, zodat het al snel bijna op een smal pad begint te lijken.

Je vind een overvloed aan dergelijke sporen in De Stille Kern.

De door mij uitgezette GPS track is daarom niet meer dan een richtlijn en kun je heel goed daarvan afwijken en je eigen GPS-spoor door dit schitterende natuurgebied trekken.

Dat vormt juist het unieke van dit struin-avontuur wat je bijna nergens anders in Nederland op deze oorspronkelijke wijze kunt ervaren.

De struintocht start vanaf het parkeerterrein van Staatsbosbeheer aan de Fediteweg, Zeewolde.

Ik heb deze mooie lente zaterdag heerlijk avontuurlijk gestruind, door de ruige bossen en over de schilderachtige open velden.

Op een gegeven moment keek ik achter om en zag een grote vos op zijn gemak de open vlakte over steken.

Hij was absoluut niet onder de indruk van mijn aanwezigheid en keek maar terloops even in mijn richting.

Ik heb deze dag het struinen door de dichte bossen niet geschuwd.

Ik had al snel in de gaten dat ik niet moest proberen om mijn eigen weg door het bos te zoeken,

Maar trouw de sporen van de dieren moest volgen.

Al leek het op het eerste gezicht dat de sporen de verkeerde richting op gingen, even later zag ik dat de dieren juist heel slim een groot obstakel in het bos hadden omzeild.

Als je dit eenmaal door hebt, dan kan je hier prima je weg vinden.

In de winter zal er voor de dieren niet veel voedzaam gras voorhanden zijn.

Geen nood echter, want aan de bomen is te zien dat boombast ook heel hoog op hun dagelijkse wintermenu staat genoteerd.

Van veel bossen zijn de stammen tot op een hoogte van bijna twee meter aangevreten.

De struin toch door De Stille Kern was voor mij een onvergetelijke ervaring!

Dat zal ik de route zelf vaker ga lopen zit er dik in.

Tijdens het uitzetten van deze route ben ik vanaf februari al 5 keer in dit stuk geweest en iedere keer kom je weer andere dingen en obstakels tegen. Mijn favoriete struin tijd is toch zeker wel de winter. nog eens gaan herhalen!

De cache: loop of struin van wp naar wp en noteer bij het wp nummer en het extra getal die op de tag staat, hiermee kan je de final berekenen.
