Voici une série de géocaches accessibles à l'année longue dans la magnifique Vallée Bras-du-Nord. Les caches sont situées le long du Sentier pédestre national sur une distance d'environ 60 km et s'adressent autant au randonneur pédestre qu'au géocacheur. Une carte topographique des sentiers est disponible pour téléchargement sur le site web. Il y a des frais d'accès de 8,50$ par jour (en 2020) pour emprunter les sentiers de la Vallée Bras-du-Nord, payables en ligne, au bureau de l'Accueil Principal situé dans le lobby de l'hôtel Roquemont, 107 Grande-Ligne (route 367), Saint-Raymond, ou bien à l'Accueil Shannahan.
Il y a quatre portes d'entrée dans la Vallée : l'Accueil Perthuis (km 0), l'Accueil Mauvaise (km 26,7), l'Accueil Cantin (environ km 32 sur le Sentier national plus un autre 2-3 km via la Boucle Montagne Art), et l'Accueil Shannahan (km 52). De plus, il y a plusieurs refuges très confortables le long du sentier où l'on peut passer la nuit si désiré, soit le Philosore (km 7,5), l'Orignal (km 18), le Montagne Art (km 34,5), le refuge La Yourte (km 46) et le refuge des Falaises (km 57), ainsi que des refuges et des yourtes dans le secteur de Shannahan. Le site web mentionné ci-haut fournit de plus amples informations sur ces refuges et leur location.
Les caches sont généralement faciles à trouver – le plus grand problème c'est qu'il n'y a pas toujours une bonne réception de signal du GPS. Pour cette raison il y a des indices assez précis fournis pour chaque cache – parce que les distances sont longues il ne faut pas que l'on gaspille son temps à chercher une cache.
Parce que les caches s'étendent sur une distance de 60 km (à l'horizontale, sans parler de la verticale!!) il n'y a pas de question de les faire dans une seule journée! Il n'y a non plus pas de « trajet idéal » pour faire les caches mais voici quelques suggestions :
• la Boucle Montagne Art, à partir de l'Accueil Cantin jusqu'au refuge Montagne Art, aller-retour mais en boucle. Le trajet se fait bien dans une journée.
• de l'Accueil Shannahan au refuge La Yourte (en haut de la chute Delaney), aller-retour. Le trajet se fait dans une journée mais il y a une dénivellation importante pour monter en haut de la chute Delaney.
• de l'Accueil Shannahan au Cap-Bédard (Mont Gibraltar), aller-retour sur le sentier des Falaises. Le trajet se fait dans une journée ou avec séjour dans le refuge des Falaises sur chemin – à noter qu'il y a une très bonne montée (400 m) au début.
• de l'Accueil Mauvaise à l'Accueil Cantin (ou vice-versa). Le trajet se fait bien dans une journée – idéalement il faudrait deux voitures, une à chaque bout.
• de l'Accueil Cantin à l'Accueil Shannahan (ou vice-versa) par une très longue journée ou préférablement avec une ou deux nuitées en route. Une voiture à chaque bout serait souhaitable.
• de l'Accueil Perthuis à l'Accueil Mauvaise (ou vice-versa). Il faudrait prévoir au moins un coucher sinon deux dans des refuges en route. Encore une fois, une voiture à chaque bout serait souhaitable.
• il y a certainement d'autres combinaisons et permutations... par exemple, le trajet de l'Accueil Perthuis à l'Accueil Shannahan avec plusieurs couchers dans les refuges en route. Ou bien, une ou plusieurs nuitées dans le Village des Yourtes près de l'Accueil Shannahan, comme point de départ pour le sentier des Falaises un jour et la montée de la chute Delaney un autre.
Peu importe le trajet choisi il faut se rappeler que les distances sont longues et le terrain est parfois ardu. Il y a des repères kilométriques à tous les kilomètres sur le sentier, et les caches sont pour la plupart identifiées en fonction de ces repères. Mais attention… l'emplacement des repères n'est pas toujours précis – parfois la distance qui sépare deux repères voisins est nettement supérieur à 1000 mètres, parfois moindre. De plus, la représentation des repères kilométriques sur la carte topographique n'est pas toujours fidèle à la réalité sur le terrain. Quelques observations : le refuge le Philosore se trouve à environ km 7,5 d'après les repères kilométriques mais en réalité c'est plus près à 10 km du début. La distance que j'ai mesurée entre les repères kilométriques 27 et 32 était de 5,7 km, et de 4,5 km entre les repères 36 et 41. Une randonnée aller-retour de l'Accueil Shannahan au Cap-Bédard (Mont Gibraltar) sur le sentier des Falaises représente en réalité une distance d'environ 16,5 km – en se fiant aux repères kilométriques l'on calcule environ 12 km et à la carte topographique, 14 km.

Pour se rendre à l'Accueil Cantin : À partir du pont sur la rivière Ste-Anne au centre-ville de St-Raymond, suivre la route 367 nord pour 0,1 km. Tourner à droite sur Monseigneur Vachon (Rang du Nord), continuer pour 4,7 km. Tourner à gauche sur le Rang Saguenay, continuer pour 6,4 km. Tourner à gauche sur le Rang Ste-Croix, continuer pour 0,4 km et le stationnement se trouve à droite juste avant le pont sur la rivière Bras-du-Nord. (Pour se rendre au début du sentier Boucle Montagne Art, traverser le pont à pied, tourner à droite sur la route Bras-du-Nord, continuer pour 100 mètres et le sentier part du champ à gauche.)
Here is a series of geocaches accessible year-round in the magnificent Vallée Bras-du-Nord. The caches are located along the National Hiking Trail over a distance of some 60 km and are geared as much to the hiker as they are to the geocacher. A topographical map (in French only) of the trails is available for downloading from the web site. There is a daily access fee of $8.50 (in 2020) to use the hiking trails of the Vallée Bras-du-Nord, payable on-line, at the main office situated in the lobby of the Roquemont Hotel, 107 Grande-Ligne (route 367), Saint-Raymond, or at Accueil Shannahan.
There are four entry points into the Vallée: Accueil Perthuis (km 0), Accueil Mauvaise (km 26.7), Accueil Cantin (approximately km 32 on the National Hiking Trail plus another 2-3 km on the Boucle Montagne Art), and Accueil Shannahan (km 52). In addition there are several comfortable huts along the way where one can spend the night if desired: Philosore (km 7.5), Orignal (km 18), Montagne Art (km 34.5), La Yourte (km 46) and Falaises (km 57), as well as huts and yourtes in the vicinity of Shannahan. The above-mentioned web site provides detailed information on these huts and their rental.
The caches are normally easy to find – the main difficulty is that there is not always good reception of a GPS signal. For this reason a precise hint is provided for each cache – because the distances are long it is important that one not waste any time in hunting for a cache.
Given the fact that the caches are spread out over a distance of some 60 km (on the horizontal plane, without even talking about the vertical plane!!) it is impossible to visit all the caches in one day! Nor is there an "ideal route" to visit the caches, but following are some suggestions:
• the Boucle Montagne Art, from Accueil Cantin to the Montagne Art hut, and return but in a loop. This outing is entirely possible to complete in one day.
• from Accueil Shannahan to the hut La Yourte (above the Delaney Falls), and return. This hike can be completed in one day but it must be remembered that there is a considerable climb to get on top of the Delaney Falls.
• from Accueil Shannahan to Cape Bédard (Mount Gibraltar) and return, following the Sentier des Falaises (the cliffs). This outing can be accomplished in one day or one can spend the night in the Falaises hut along the way – one must keep in mind that there is a very significant climb (400 m) at the beginning of the hike.
• from Accueil Mauvaise to Accueil Cantin (or vice-versa). This hike can be done in one day, but ideally one should plan on having a vehicle at each end.
• from Accueil Cantin to Accueil Shannahan or vice-versa, either in one very long day or preferably with one or two overnight stays along the way. A car at each end would be desirable.
• from Accueil Perthuis to Accueil Mauvaise, or vice-versa. In this case it would be necessary to plan at least one, if not two, overnight stays in huts along the way. Once again, a vehicle at each end would be most practical.
• there are obviously many other combinations and permutations... for example, a hike from Accueil Perthuis to Accueil Shannahan with several overnight stays in huts along the way. Or, one or more nights in the Village des Yourtes close to Accueil Shannahan, as a starting point for hikes along the Sentier des Falaises one day and a hike to the top of Delaney Falls another day.
Regardless of the hike that is decided upon, it must be remembered that the distances are long and the terrain is at times difficult. There are kilometer markers along the trail at every kilometer, and the caches are identified in many cases with reference to these markers. But be forewarned… the spacing of these markers is not always accurate – sometimes the distance separating two adjacent markers is significantly more than 1000 meters, and sometimes it is less. In addition the representation of these markers on the topographical maps is not always in keeping with the reality along the trail. Some observations: the Philosore hut is located at approximately km 7.5 according to the distance markers but in reality it is more like 10 km from the start. The distance that I measured between kilometer markers 27 and 32 was 5.7 km, and it was 4.5 km between the 36 and 41 kilometer markers. A return hike from Accueil Shannahan to Cape Bédard (Mount Gibraltar) along the Sentier des Falaises represents in reality a distance of some 16.5 km – according to the kilometer markers one would estimate 12 km and according to the topographical map, 14 km.

Directions to Accueil Cantin: From the bridge over the St. Anne River in downtown St-Raymond, take highway 367 North for 0.1 km. Turn right onto Monseigneur Vachon (Rang du Nord), continue for 4.7 km. Turn left onto Rang Saguenay and continue for 6.4 km. Turn left onto Rang Ste-Croix and continue for 0.4 km; the parking area is on the right just before the bridge over the Bras-du-Nord River.
