Geocache Description:

The Goat Island Adventure

This event is a great opportunity to experience one of the newest areas added to the National Park inventory. It is scheduled for June 14 at 8:00. Please log a "Will Attend" in order to receive notifications concerning the event and potential alternatives for inclement weather.

This Event is open to anyone. While it is not a requirement, access to a canoe or kayak makes for an exciting adventure, rather than just an event.

The Adventure is scheduled for June 14, 2014. We will meet at Myron Grove Boat Launch west of Vermillion, SD (see Additional Waypoints below) at 8-8:30am. This will be the initial meeting place. We will unload boats and gear at this location and then shuttle vehicles down to the Clay County Park Boat Launch which will be the final point of debarkation.

While signing a log is not a requirement, we have a bit of a tradition of "signing a log" ON Goat Island. Please post a "Will Attend" log if you plan to join us.

There are 30(+) caches in the area and more are planned for the event.

Basic Safety Considerations

  • Avoid dehydration and drink plenty of water.
  • Take along and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Take waterproof bags to protect your gear, especially those things that don't mix well with water, such as cell phones.
  • Please avoid inflatables for watercraft. The unpredictable currents and hazards under the waterline make this a risk and a challenge.
  • Please wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD).
  • If you are a novice, ask for tips on canoeing and kayaking, seek professional instruction before your trip if possible.
  • Avoid dehydration and drink plenty of water.
  • Partner up with someone. Make sure that partners or teams of three are accountable for each other.
  • Know your launch and take-out points ahead of time.
  • If severe weather approaches get off the river as soon as possible and seek shelter.
  • If you capsize, stay upstream from your boat. Currents pushing against your canoe can trap and hold you underwater.
  • Avoid overhanging limbs and submerged logs that can overturn a boat and cause injury.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. Sharp objects can cut bare feet.
  • Be aware of hazards such as poison ivy, stinging nettles, ticks, slippery banks, crumbling cliffs and rattlesnakes.
  • Do not dive or jump into the river. The river can be shallow with many rocks.
  • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and insect repellent.
  • Avoid dehydration and drink plenty of water.

There There may also be some new caches planted prior to the event. Participants may have an opportunity to score an FTF or two! No guarantees for this, but it has been known to happen.

Inclement Weather

In the event of bad weather or rough river conditions, this event will be canceled or rescheduled. Please stay posted and watch for updates on this page.

Missouri National Recreational River

The Missouri National Recreational River is divided into two parts. The 39 Mile District runs from Fort Randall Dam to Running Water, South Dakota. The 59 Mile District runs from Gavins Point Dam to Ponca State Park. Our event is focused on the 59 Mile District, specifically the area circled in red. The MNRR is one of the newest parks in the National Park System. More information can be found at this link.

I have a very limited supply of watercraft this year. If you have extra, please let the host know. I have a list of folks needing a spot in a canoe or kayak.

Bring a minimum of two liters of water per person. More would be preferable. As the temperatures go up, the need for hydrating increases. There are no faucets on Goat Island.
