Idrijski grad, ki dominira nad starim delom mesta, je ohranil zgodovinsko ime Gewerkenegg, kar v nemškem jeziku pomeni rudniški grad. Sezidan je bil v letih 1522–1533 za potrebe Rudnika živega srebra in ga zato po pravilih gradoslovja ne moremo smatrati za pravi grad. V njem so sprva shranjevali žito in živo srebro, kasneje pa je več kot 400 let nudil prostore rudniški upravi. Tekom stoletij so bili v njem nameščeni tudi različni uradi, šole in stanovalci. Renesančni grajski kompleks s tremi okroglimi vogalnimi stolpi in čelnim stolpom je sredi 18. stoletja doživel baročno predelavo – uredili so notranje arkadno dvorišče in ga poslikali z dekorativnimi freskami. Današnjo podobo je dobil v prvi polovici 90. let 20. stoletja.

Dominating over the old town, Idrija's castle has preserved its historical name, Gewerkenegg, which in German means mine castle. It was built in the period from 1522-1533 for the needs of the mercury mine. Initially used to store wheat and mercury, the castle was later occupied by the mine administration for more than 400 years. Over the centuries, it has also housed various offices, schools and residents. In the mid 18th century, the Renaissance castle complex with its three round corner towers and single front tower was renovated in baroque style and painted with decorative frescoes. Its present-day appearance dates back to the first half of the 1990's.
