The first macarons appeared in France in the Middle Ages – numerous towns seem to claim their origin, with no clear victor in sight. They are very popular in Luxembourg. The ingredients and shape have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. The macaron is a small granular and fluffy cake with a rounded shape, about 3-5 cm in diameter. Derived from meringue , it is made from powdered almond , icing sugar, sugar and egg whites. It can sometimes be seen sandwiched with buttercream in the middle.
