Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden close to a busy intersection, placed to recall a unique Dutch attraction encountered during our recent trip to the Netherlands.

Last June, our family flew to Amsterdam with my parents to visit my brother Phil who lives in nearby Haarlem. And of course we couldn’t miss one of the best known local attractions, Amsterdam’s Red Light district.

So off we went on a Saturday evening, my hubby and I, my brother acting as our guide and my Dad. Now my Dad can be a bit strange at times (it’s that mathematical mind of his) - he is fascinated by the fact that so many houses in Amsterdam lean this way and that.  The land is below sea level with dykes all around, the ground is wet, many houses date back 300 years and more.  So over time, many of them have started sinking, and leaning to one side or the other.  Two houses built next to each other can be even at street level, and separated by 15 - 20 inches on the 3rd or 4th floor.  And my Dad finds this all very intriguing.

So we wander in to the famous Red Light District and my Dad’s first reaction was to say “will you look at how far those houses leaning”!  Now with everything else to look at, we kind of rolled our eyes, and replied “Really!!!”.  And in fact, I think that’s all he looked for during our entire visit through the district.  Yup, that’s my Dad for you.

PS now if you were to ask my PEI hubby what he recalls from that visit, he certainly would have a different tale to tell.

The cache is a camoed match container hanging from a branch. The cache should be winter friendly depending on the height of the snow banks.

Parking available at the side of the road, but please be careful not to create a road hazard!
