HGNP #1: Fischer's Tower

The cache, a small screw-topped plastic camo-pot, is hidden at about shoulder height behind a small bush in a hole in the separate rock formation to the south-east of the tower.
Fischer's tower is located in the relatively small (68 sq.km) but fascinating and panoramic Hell's Gate National Park which opened in 1984. Named
by explorers Fisher and Thomson in 1883 after a narrow break in the cliffs, it has some great scenery - towering cliffs, water-gouged deep gorges, scrub-clad volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam from the Ol Karia geothermal power station which make it one of the most atmospheric parks. It is also one of the only 2 parks where one can walk or cycle freely without an official KWS escort.
It is believed to be the outlet of a prehistoric freshwater lake which once stretched as far as Nakuru and on whose shores early human communities are thought to have lived.
The park vegetation is mainly grassland and shrub (dominated by leleshwa bushes and several varieties of acacia trees) and a wide variety of succulents. Wildlife includes eland, buffalo, zebra, leopard, lion, hyena, baboon, impala, Grant's and Thompson's gazelle, klipspringer, rock hyrax and Chanler's mountain reedbuck. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the park, including rare raptors such as the griffon vulture, hooded vulture and Verreaux's eagle which live high on the cliff-face of the Main Wall.
The Park, with its dramatic scenery has been used as a location for several Hollywood movies including King Solomon's Mines, Magambo, Born Free, Sheena Queen of the Jungle and Tomb Raider II. The setting of the The Lion King (1994) is also modelled on the park.
Fischer's Tower is a 25m high jagged volcanic plug which is all that remains of an ancient volcano. It is named after Gustav Fischer the German explorer who passed through here in 1883. According to Maasai local tradition, the rock is the petrified figure of a chief's daughter who turned around against the traditional rules to take one last look at her home before leaving to be married. The tower is home to a colony of rock hyrax (dassies) which like to bask in the sun during cooler parts of the day.
