Geocache Description:

what

The event logbook will be set up outside of the bunker so that everybody can attend the event, but those who wish to go inside on the bunker tour will be able to purchase tickets via our web shop. Discounted tickets for admission to the bunker on the evening have now sold out. Unfortunately dogs will not be allowed inside the bunker, but are permitted outside. We will provide water bowls for those who are staying outside with their dogs.

In 1952 the Government took 25 acres of land, bulldozed it, and began work building the bunker and cottage where this rather unique event is being held. This Bunker was designed to protect central Government during a nuclear attack during the Cold War. The bungalow that the bunker is below was designed to look like a typical farmhouse cottage to prevent the bunker being discovered by members of the public or the enemy. Although there was no need to use the bunker as there wasn't a nuclear attack, it remained active until 1994.

The bunker has three levels and is almost 45 metres deep. The top floor acted as the living quarters, the middle floor held the Government departments, and the bottom floor held the communications, plant room and military. The bunker was designed to hold enough food and water for up to 600 people to stay inside for up to 3 months. Generators provided electricity and tanks buried underground on top of the bunker were designed with a capacity to hold 24,000 gallons of water.

Large 1.5 ton blast doors found after descending the entrance tunnel protected the occupants from the outside world. A back door was also added, again with heavy blast doors. Outside of the back entrance, fresh air was pumped through primary filters into the plant room within the bunker. It would then pass through secondary filters before being pumped around the bunker. Along with the filter, a cooler was built outside of the back door to counteract the heat that would have been produced by 600 bodies.

The bunker is full of all of its original items. There are maps, typewriters, computers, Geiger counters, body bags, cardboard coffins, beds, and original furniture as well. The bunker has been very well preserved and is a real treasure trove of history. Join us for this very unique opportunity to visit where we have sole access to the bunker on the evening of the event. You never know what may be lurking inside...

Make sure you log your will attend and maybe you'll get a nice treat at the end!
