Geocache Description:

Cerkvica Marijinega rojstva

The Church of Mary's Birth

SLO

Kmetice so prinašale poljščine in sadje, predvsem fige.

Živimo namreč v 130 let stari hiši v katero je vgrajenih  kar nekaj kamnoseških del istega mojstra označenih z enako črko f in stilno neverjetno podobnih.

According to the dates, the church dates back to the 17th century, but Gothic groin vaults indicate that it is probably even older. 1659 is the year that is carved on the door of the wall. Later the church was renovated several times. One time the renovation or restoration occurred was surely in 1784 – the year can be seen on the bell tower. The church has one main and two side altars. On the main altar there is a statue of Mary with Jesus. The statue was made in Munich and blessed in 1890 on the Assumption Day. The side altars are dedicated to St. Urban, patron saint of vineyards. Although it sounds strange, this used to be wine-producing area. This is also evident from the local geographical names. Even the area that is now overgrown with trees is still called Nogradi (Vineyard). The main altar is dedicated to St. Sebastian who is the patron saint against contagious diseases. This is no coincidence, since in the years between 1788 and 1800 a plague raged here, killing a great many people.

Those who survived took a vow to go on a pilgrimage to Mary Mother of God in Kačiče every fourth Saturday in June. Thus, the church became a popular pilgrimage route. A lot of people were gathering here and trade was thriving. People came all the way from of Trieste, as well as from Istria. Women farmers used to bring crops and fruits, especially figs. The custom was preserved even in the post-war period.

Near the church there is a crossroads – the road splits into three roads: one leading to Javorje, one to Gaberje and one to Kačiče. The latter than splits to one leading to Lokev and one to Istria. Due to this strategic location there was once a tollhouse here.

The church was renovated several times. Especially visible are the renovations around the door. Research show (Source=  http://dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:DOC-22NG28BI/6ad99391-8edb-4bee-ac43-d0a02953ff10/PDF) that most of the work was done by a mason and stone carver called Anže Felicijan who used to mark his creations with either his full name or a stylishly carved letter F. He is known for the portal of St. Peter's church in Klanec pri Kozini. He also worked on the Rodiška church. Apparently he was a distant relative to my wife. We live namely in a 130-year-old house in which several works of the same master stonecutter are inbuilt. They are all marked with the same letter F and incredibly similar in style. Even the lastname matches. Therefore, somehow I feel that it is my call to put a geocache here.

Geocache is hidden in the place where the tollhouse used to be. Geocache is located at the given coordinates which have to be calculated.

The coordinates here specify a nearby parking spot, but i suggest that you stop in the village itself, which is small but beautiful and worth seeing.

Precise coordinates have to be calculated:
N  45  AB.CDE   = 38 (sum of numbers)
E 013  FB.GDE   = 30 (sum of numbers)
Where:
G=F-A
C=G+F
E=  Last digit of year in which church of virgin mary was last restored inside.
