Geocache Description:

You will be looking for a small, plastic container.  The code word for the passport is printed on a laminate card inside of the geocache.  There is a log sheet inside.

Discover your connection to Upper Michigan’s Copper Country through heritage centers, museums, and outstanding recreational areas in this geo-trail developed by the Copper Country Trail National Byway.  The Copper Country Trail National Byway is a 47-mile stretch of US-41 from Houghton to Copper Harbor in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan that follows the underground copper lode that is basis of our exciting and turbulent history.

Geocaches have been hidden at 17 participating sites throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.  All of the sites on this geo-trail represent the rich cultural and natural mosaic that the Copper Country is. The first 300 participants to locate at least 13 geocaches will receive a custom Copper Country Geo-Trail lapel pin.

To receive a lapel pin, participants must download the Copper Country Geo-Trail Passport and follow the directions.

White City Park

The Keweenaw Peninsula is famous for its copper deposits.  The Jacobsville area is famous for its sandstone.  Quarried heavily from 1880-1920, the sandstone was a popular material used in constructing buildings all over the eastern United States.  During its heyday, the area was home to nearly one thousand people.

In addition to the sandstone industry, there was an entertainment attraction called White City Amusement Park.  It included a swimming beach, pavilion and dance hall, and many rides, including a carousel.  The park’s establishment was inspired by the “The Midway” at the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, which featured rides, sideshows, and the world-famous Ferris Wheel.  The architectural style of the buildings at the fair were reminiscent of the classical greek style, which fairgoers nicknamed “The White City.”  Hence, the name of this amusement park and others that popped up throughout the country after the close of the World’s Fair.

By the time that World War I had arrived, so had the end of the White City Amusement Park.  After its closure, many of the buildings disappeared, with the exception of the old dock.  Today, the park that pays homage to this short time in history is situated south of where the original amusement park stood.
