Dit begijnhof, een van de drie in Gent, was ooit het grootste in Europa. Vanaf 1796 raakte het langzaam maar zeker ontmanteld. In 1874 verhuisden de begijntjes gedwongen naar een nieuw Elisabethbegijnhof buiten de stadsmuren. Het begijnhof werd opgeslokt door de stad. Alleen dit straatje bewaart tot op vandaag zijn pittoreske eigenheid. En, naar aloude gewoonte, draagt zo wat elk huisje de naam van een heilige.

This Beguinage, one of three in Ghent, once was the largest in Europe. From 1796 it became gradually dismantled. In 1874, the beguines were forced to move to a new beguinage, outside the city walls. The old one was swallowed by the city. Only this street preserved its picturesque character. And, according to an ancient custom, each cottage carries the name of a saint.
