This cache has been archived.

cameracowgirl: Great event! Let's do this again next year as a "refresher course." In the meanwhile I am going to buy an air horn to carry with my caching gear...

Geocache Description:

In memory of my friend Norman Crumrine, who went for a walk in East Sooke Park in 1995 and is still missing.

On Saturday April 11, from 6-9ish in the evening, come out and learn how to be a geocaching survivor!

We geocachers love hunting for plastic containers in the woods, but sometimes the woods don’t love us back.  We rely heavily on our GPS units, but they aren’t perfect and neither are we.  A dead battery, a misplaced/broken GPS, not knowing how to use the tracks feature, or sustaining a geo-injury could mean needing to be rescued while caching in the woods.

Guest speakers for this event include…

A Canadian Forces SAR technician, who will speak on the following topics:

  • What you should do to prevent getting lost or injured
  • What gear you should carry to prevent getting lost or injured
  • What you should do if you are lost or injured
  • What safety info you should know if you are using a boat to find a cache

A medic (LumboTire), who will speak on the following topics:

  • What first aid knowledge and gear you should carry in the woods

A BC Conservation Officer, who will speak on the following topics:

  • What to do if you meet a bear, cougar, wolf, bull elk, poacher, or hostile muggle
  • What to do if you come across illegal activities (grow-op, evidence of poaching) in the woods

You (yes, you).  Bring your suggestions on the following:

  • Survival tips
  • How to use the tracks feature of your GPS

Bring paper and a pen for taking notes. Also bring your GPS and be prepared to either show other cachers how to use the tracks feature of their GPS, or have them teach you how to use the tracks feature of your GPS. You may also want to bring some snacks for sharing. A tended bar will be available for beverages. This is an indoor event. Parking may be a challenge, as there is a muggle event happening in the same building at the time of this event, so be prepared to park little further away than usual.

Because this event is all about learning caching safety, we want to have as many people in attendance as possible; therefore, we would like to encourage out-of-town cachers to carpool. Also please get the word out and let your friends know about this event, especially regular members and local newbies who may not receive notifications.

We are pleased to announce that Landsharkz has donated some fabulous door prizes for this event. Thank you, Landsharkz!
